Gateway believes that everyone should have opportunity to enjoy and engage in the arts, and that the arts enrich our lives.
Based on this belief, in 2018 Gateway Academy has been working together with Act 3 Theatrics to run a pilot 10-session Drama program for adults with intellectual disabilities.
For people past the age of 18 in the special education system, there is a glaring gap and lack of opportunities beyond graduation. There are limited places for continued training and especially, enrichment for these people. This drama programme was initiated to help further the learning and development of this community, and hopefully add to the further quality and fullness of their lives.
The participants in our Gateway Academy programme engage in drama techniques such as movement, music, games and role playing to help develop communication skills beyond their daily needs, such as articulation, understanding body language, interpersonal skills and self-confidence. Within a few weeks, we observed that participants have demonstrated improvements such as more expressiveness in their communication and more speaking from usually non-verbal participants. Thus, we believe this program has the potential to help participants' personal development greatly, with a long-term view towards employability and integration in society.
In 2019, Gateway Academy aims to run a long-term programme on a weekly basis, reach more beneficiaries, and achieve greater impact on the beneficiaries.
